Listen for yourself here (hit play on the widget, then the download link at lower right to download an mp3. Sorry their widget kind of sucks). Then read what our panel of experts thinks!

Hazel Lord
From the Wagnerian inspired intro to the blistering contrapuntal twin axe work of K.K Downing & Glen Tipton and the throbbing rhythm section of Ian Hill and Scott Travis Judas Priest have never sounded heavier. This track (Halford’s vocals in particular) literally drips goblets of sonic testosterone from the speaker. The production values are superior to everything since the 2001 remastered version of “British Steel”. The
verdict is in! Nostradamus kicks ass. Punk Ass metal bands beware! The
Priest is back to reclaim what’s theirs!

Agent Ackme
It’s not Dethklok, but I’d love to hear them do it. Great song, well played! I just hope to God they don’t bring out a two foot high Nostradamus and some midget cheerleaders. “HE’S OUR MAN!”

Martin Luther Gene
So it really is Judas Priest… doing a real concept album! About Nostradamus! I kept waiting for the punchline until I just read they really did just release this AND launching a world tour to promote it. I find it a little odd that their North American Tour only has 1 US concert scheduled:

JULY 2008 North America/Canada Tour
22nd WAMU Theatre/Seattle, WA, USA
23rd Save On Foods Memorial Centre/Victoria, BC, Canada
24th General Motors Place/Vancouver, BC, Canada
26th McMahon Stadium – MONSTERS OF ROCK/Calgary, AB, Canada
27th Shaw Conference Centre/Edmonton, AB, Canada
29th Credit Union Centre/Saskatoon, SK, Canada
30th MTS Centre/Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Come on, the Save On Foods Memorial Centre? Shaw Conference Centre? Credit Union Centre? Doesn’t it sound just a bit too much like the last days of Spinal Tap?

As for the free preview track “Nostradamus”… It reeks of of Pro Tools or some other digital recording / editing software. Sounds too squeaky clean and formatted for old head bangers. Funny how kids doing music today are using old analog equipment found on eBay or adding “vinyl filters” for that “vintage” sound on their digital recordings. It will be interesting to compare a live version to this one once tour footage hits youtube.

I have to admit, I am intrigued. Ok, 1 song about Nostradamus by Judas Priest is par for the course… it made me chuckle. This 2 year project? I’d listen to more if it turns up somewhere on theinternet. I have my “metal” favorites: White Zombie, Anthrax, Rammstein, Powermad just to name a few. Judas Priest just never made on the list. But with lyrics like “Nostradamus… Nostradamus… Nostradamus… he’s our man!”, well like I said… just makes me want to hear more!

Buck Huff
Buck still has the same 8-track of the Outlaws in his Ranchero that he bought at a Gallup, NM truck stop in 1983. He declined to comment on the latest from Judas Priest.

Ava Cairo
On first listen I would have sworn it was the South Park boys, Stone & Parker, mocking an Andrew Lloyd Weber musical. The not-quite-metal sound, the silly lyrics (Nostradamus…He’s our Man!) did not conjure images of a leathered Rob Halford taking to the stage on a Harley.

Rob’s vocals sounded strong enough but you’d have to hear him do it live to know if he really does have the pipes after all these years.
The subject matter, Nostradamus, could give them an edge with raising another 14 year old male army of the dark and brooding.
The old fans might be past that phase by now.

I look forward to hearing the entire album. It may have not amused me in the way they intended, but I like it just the same.

Legba
Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian really summed it up: Judas Priest did away with the last shards of the blues present in heavy metal. I think he nailed it, and also nailed why their cover of Johnny B. Goode evokes a level of cognitive dissonance equivalent to Rammstein and Bjork covering late 70′s Fleetwood Mac. When this was released in the late 80′s, you couldn’t help but choose a side when hearing it. But some of the fans driven away by this sacrilegious Chuck Berry cover might remember Priest hits like Breaking the Law, You’ve Got Another Thing Coming or Living After Midnight, and come back for a steaming slice of Nostradamus.

A concept album about Nostradamus from a band like Judas Priest evokes the beloved Spinal Tap, with equal parts Saucy Jack and Stonehenge
present in the finished product. I wonder if Priest manager Bill Curbishley put some ideas in their heads about a property that could be turned into a Broadway musical. Personally, I’m hoping this leads Priest down the road to a Jazz Odyssey.

The band’s guitarists sure sound like they’ve still got the huge rack mounted amp and effects stacks from the 80′s, and they’re giving their modes a workout for the solos. The bridge feels kind of tacked on, but might work with an army of dancers high kicking their way through it, with Rob Halford popping wheelies on a Harley in the middle. Ultimately, only Nostradamus himself could predict the reception this concept album will get.

Three of them appear to have been cut; the fourth is currently suffering from a power disruption. All are in the Middle East. Is it a coincidence? Read on for the timeline, the facts, and my analysis.

Timeline
On January 30th, two cables were cut near Alexandria, Egypt: The Flag Europe-Asia cable (PDF Link) and the SEA-ME-WE 4. The Flag cable is owned by India’s Flag Telecom, and SEA-ME-WE 4 is a joint project of 16 international telecoms led by Sri Lanka Telecom. According to the smart folks at Renesys Corporation, 13 countries in the region were significantly impacted, with Egypt and Pakistan getting the worst of it.

On February 1st, a third cable was cut off the coast of Dubai: the Falcon cable, also owned by Flag Telecom. The cable runs between the United Arab Emirates and Oman, and the full impact of this cut has not yet been determined.

On February 3rd, there were reports of a fourth cable break. So far it isn’t clear if this fourth incident is an actual break or not. Initial reports attributed this one to a power problem rather than a physical break in the cable.

Also on February 3rd, the Egyptian government reported that ships were not to blame for the cable cuts on January 30th. Onshore video cameras showed no ships in the area when the cables were cut, and maritime maps of the area mark the area as off limits to ships.

Prognosis for repair
Repairs on some of the cables could start as soon as Tuesday, February 5th. Estimates for completion range from February 8-15. However, this estimate may be overly optimistic. The Taiwan earthquake of December 27, 2006 was the last major undersea cable disruption. Initially, repairs were expected to be done by January 9. That date soon slipped to January 15. However, repairs were not actually completed until February 15, 2007 (PDF Link).

Is Iran impacted?
There is some conflicting information on this topic. A Slashdot article about the third cut indicated Iran was completely cut off. However, Renesys Corp. estimates 20% of Iran’s networks were impacted. Significant, but not a total outage.

Coincidence, or something more?
Three events impacting four Internet backbone in the Middle East over the course of five days. Are these incidents unrelated coincidence? There’s certainly a precedent for seismic events breaking cables this way. However, USGS data indicates earthquakes in Turkey, Greece, and Algeria last week. All were in the 4.3-4.8 magnitude range. There was also a 4.8 quake in the Persian Gulf on Febrary 2, the day after the cable break near Dubai. The seismic timeline doesn’t support a scenario like the Taiwan earthquake, which was magnitude 7.1. Another initial explanation was a ship dropping anchor on the cables and breaking them. The latest info from the Egyptian government contradicts this for the first incident. Do they have a motive to lie? There’s no evidence either way for a ship causing the second incident. The official explanation of power problems for the third incident seems to rule out a ship in that case. An errant anchor finding and severing a cable as thick as a man’s arm at the bottom of the sea is believable in one case, but highly unlikely to happen multiple times hundreds of miles apart in a single week.

Having exhausted the simple explanations, let’s look at the esoteric. Specifically, the USS Jimmy Carter. The Carter joined the US Navy’s submarine fleet in February 2005, and was built from the ground up with the ability to tap undersea fiber cables. Tapping undersea cables is nothing new. The NSA was doing it during the Cold War. Copper is relatively easy to tap without being detected, either by using something like a Vampire tap or via induction. These methods don’t interrupt the electrons flowing through the cable as the tap is installed. But fiber is a different beast. You can’t just puncture fiber and tap in. You have to cut it and splice it.

So how long does it take for divers working at depths of 3000-4000 feet to cut a fiber cable and install a tap? It seems to me the complexity and difficulty would be similar to what astronauts face when they do a spacewalk to repair the shuttle. Let’s assume a minimum of four hours. Any impact lasting more than a minute or so would absolutely be noticed by the cable operators, and investigated. A four hour outage that mysteriously fixed itself would definitely draw attention. However, cutting the cable first, some distance from the tap location, would give the cable owners a problem to find and fix, and hopefully keep them from finding the tap. Run a cable from the tap to a relay location some distance away, filter it down to the interesting stuff, and relay to Washington. Given the current attitude towards the FISA Act, this kind of wiretapping makes perfect sense.

There’s one other message here for governments in the region: the USA controls your Internet. But why would the Bush Administration want to reinforce this message right now? Possibly because of the Iran Oil Bourse. The Iranian government is opening their own international exchange on February 19th, trading oil in Euros and other currencies, but not Dollars. If this idea catches on, it could be fatal to the already weakened Dollar. A modern international market without an Internet connection is unthinkable, and there’s an implied threat here that any country not trading oil in dollars could soon find itself cut off from the entire Internet. A lot of countries will not be willing to take that risk.

But the most frightening possibility is that this isn’t intended as a veiled threat, but as a prelude to an actual attack against Iran. If an attack is imminent, disrupting communications in the region would be a logical preliminary step. Under this scenario, expect an attack on Iran prior to these cables being repaired. More cut cables wouldn’t surprise me either.

We’ll continue to follow this story as it develops. If you have any other theories or explanations, please leave a comment below.

A very special Thanksgiving from GodzMonkey:

“Ahhh, the Holidays!

So yesterday I cooked up a turkey breast and doctored up some Stove Top Stuffing with
chopped onion, celery, garlic & mushrooms… got one of them little tubs of pre-made
mashed potatoes and it was all good. Watched a few videos while cooking, eating and
tossing back a few beers. Not a bad Thanksgiving until cleaning up the mess later that
night, when while washing dishes and pans I looked down and saw water pooling up up
around my feet.

A look under the sink revealed that dish water was heavily leaking through one of the
old corroded slip-nuts that connects the “P” trap to the drain pipe. A bucket was an
easy fix while I pondered calling the landlady, who would then call a plumber, and since
this wasn’t a dire emergency like a busted water pipe or clogged toilet, chances were
that I’d have a bucket under the sink until sometime next week which would also mean
having to take time off from work to let the plumber in.

So, while most people were out attacking department stores for that “Black Friday” sale,
I made a trip to Home Depot (well, two trips). A PVC P trap kit runs about $6 bucks, so
it didn’t seem like much to spend to quickly resolve the leak. When I got home I was all
ready to get my hands dirty when I realized that the channel lock pliers I vividly
remembered owning were not in the tool box. Damn! Hence the the second trip back to Home
Depot and an additional $10 bucks spent.

The trap wasn’t all that hard to replace, but it was a bit messy and uncomfortable and
now I really do own some channel lock pliers! ”

Crazy week here with the fires and wind. Heard this afternoon that there are still 7
fires burning around southern California.

It was like a brief glimpse of the apocalypse, fires from Malibu to San Diego and one of
the worst Santa Ana winds ever. They blew for 3 days straight. Blew so hard that it sent
the smoke and ash sideways into the metro areas. Daylight had a eerie yellow glow,
sunrise was the most intense… not only did the wind hit it’s peak just before dawn,
but the morning sun filtered through all that smoke made everything look like it was
being lit by orange neon lights. And it was damn hot!

The gusts of wind at night were so fierce it sounded like somebody was shaking the front
door. Windows rattled like there was an earthquake. Made it tough to sleep those first
few nights. It was hot at night too. Had to keep the widows closed because of the wind
and ash. Even so, there is still a gritty dust on everything in my apartment. Even in
the car, ash blew in through the vents. Everything smells like burnt grass.

Four days of burning watery red eyes, lots of sneezing, coughing and a sore throat.

The winds started to die down by Thursday, yesterday it cooled off and was even foggy in
the morning which only made the burnt grass smell worse. Today it was cloudy and even
rained a little bit this afternoon but was still in the low 80′s. The weather report
says the winds might kick up again next week. On the news they say that will be a good
thing – it will blow the fires back towards what’s already burned. They figure it will
take another 2 weeks to put the fires out. The estimate on property damage is 1.6
billion dollars.

Smokey the Bear… why have you forsaken us!

Leopard Day was a fun success at The Biltmore. I stopped off at Sak’s then on to the reasonable line that wrapped around the gorgeously landscaped building.

Of course, folks were in good mood. It was also the usual Friday night event at The Biltmore so lots of awesome doggies were out and a non-offensive reggae band. They were so inoffensive it took us awhile to figure out they were actually playing reggae.

Everything moved quickly once our 45 minute wait in line was concluded. The mac zealout that nearly fainted in a puddle of his own urine because we had no interest in an iphone didn’t really make the line more endurable. The older gentleman telling us about converting cameras to infra-red, he was very cool.

Inside the store, we were handed t-shirts and shown the line for just the new OS Leopard. It was quick. I don’t think we were in the store waiting more than ten minutes.

Then on to the MindFreezer party beverage from Coffee Plantation and home.

How is this new OS? Eh, it does some new stuff. I just had to have it. I’m kind of a mac zealot myself.

Twilight Zone marathon in it’s third day, World Cup Game Germany vs Italy, CNN showing Space Shuttle prep on one side of the screen, Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest on the other.

I think after the Shuttle lifts off (or blows up or is scrubbed) the screen should be replaced with the dumbasses at the Whitehouse Hunger Strike.

No hot dogs or sody pops for Cindy Sheehan until the Iraqi troops come home. Susan Sarandon and Sean Pean are not so sure what fasting means so they will be taking turns for each other not eating. It’s called a “rolling fast” and could possibly be more idiotic than just plain out harming your body by standing in the sun not eating. Neither method will do a damn thing but make me and millions of others laugh disgustedly while we eat things god never invented.

The Alien Jesus Command Division is now housed in one of the nicest places we might have ever lived. We are grateful that we’ve been spared what is increasingly becoming a non-middle class nation. We are quite middle right now and in true American fashion we say, “Hey, We got Ours! Get away from my car.”

This is a day to think about what the USA has always said it stood for but never delivers without a monkey’s paw twist ending. These bastards in power now are the best blend of power, greed, and total indifference to human suffering. They are perverting and derailing everything the Founding Fathers (deceptive pricks in their own right) worked for through their own hunger strikes that they called “we have no food.” I’d prefer to think about the better possibilities to come. Just for today.

Today, I’m going to eat well while sitting on my ass enjoying all this great television. And may some fortunate God bless America so that we can leave people all over the world alone so they can do the same.

Some thoughts on navigating the street of London on a bicycle

This summer in London, a couple of weeks before the underground explosions propelled people to above ground transportation I finally got around to fixing a bike that had kindly been donated to me. I got the brakes changed, the tires were pumped up to around 100psi, I tightened the steering column and I was more or less ready to take on the streets of London. It was and still is a rusty old ladies bike, completely operational and quite charming.

Having feared the traffic of London for good reason, I slowly started to explore the streets. Watching from the sidelines in the beginning trying to figure out how it all worked.

At this point it’s probably a good idea to explain a couple of things. I am not new to riding a bicycle; I have done that for years and with great success. Crashed a couple of times, mostly self-inflicted and alcohol related. One thing is cycling along the sea on a dedicated cycle lane in Denmark, another is navigating the London traffic network.

Here it’s a whole other game. No bike lanes and loads of traffic. Buses up to 18 meters in length, double-deckers, white unmarked cars and vans, motorcycles, police cars and whining ambulances. It’s a bloody nightmare, a mess where the queues sometimes stretch for more than a mile. Having relied on public transportation for years it was a bit of miracle finally to realise just how easy it was to get around on a bike.

As with something like this I started out slowly. First exploring an area I knew very well, getting to know the streets, memorising the traffic patterns of roundabouts. Ever so slowly I expanded my area and I became more adventurous.

There is nothing quite like discovering something new that has always been possible. It’s a that tiny rush of adrenalin – knowing that you are always moving forward unlike your comrades stuck in their metal cars moving inches at the time.

With growing confidence I took on the streets, easily cycling from Brixton, hitting Clapham North in minutes, making a sharp left turn and cycling past Stockwell Station, where the Police only weeks later would kill the Brazilian electrician. Then onwards towards Oval and full speed ahead, overtaking busses and cars on the inside, then more of them lined up in a jam on the outside. Jumping up on the curb when there was no other way around something, and heading towards Waterloo station, swirling in and out of slow moving cars moving up in the queue before a red light, trying to balance the bike without stopping – then, amber – green. Full speed ahead and across Waterloo Bridge with the best view of London. On my left the London Eye and on my right the National Theatre which is beautifully illuminated at night – and I can see all the way down the Thames. Bloody fantastic.

Then into central London where speed drops dramatically and traffic worsens. Here it’s very easy to get lost especially down the one-way streets in Soho, and sometimes finding yourself going up the wrong way with traffic coming towards is not funny.

After the explosions the news was talking about a massive increase in cyclists – which has been very empowering. Often I find myself in small groups driving more or less the same route, all very civilised. No one talks to one another, but still there is a sense of a group dynamic, even if it’s only for a very brief moment. At night it’s even more surreal, with an ocean of blinking bike lights safely guiding you home after a long day’s work.

It is, however, not all sweet. One day I was trying to catch a train and biking rather fast down a small country where all the cars were patiently waiting for the traffic light to change. I took the chance and jumped the red light, something which I’ve done many, many times in London – where it’s not only essential but sometimes necessary. In the countryside they don’t like that kind of behaviour and seconds after doing it I was asked to pull over by a huge Volvo police car. Shit. They gave me all the crap you could possible imagine, but I kept thinking – I am the one on a bike, I am the fragile individual making my way through the traffic, one wrong move by a car and I could be thrown off my bike, unprotected. Anyway to make a long and rather sad story short they just threatened me, I was never given a ticket.

From then onwards I was a bit more careful – still am, no need to unnecessarily have an encounter with the police. Speaking of safety here are a couple of useful suggestions:

- Have really good brakes. Tune them weekly.
- Wear a helmet.
- Lights at night are good.
- Always drive to the front of queued cars waiting at a traffic stop.
- Never hesitate. Hesitation will kill you.
- Never follow another cyclist.
- Be really good at accelerating.
- Dress appropriate. Lycra is not the only way.

Today I unfortunately learned about one of the bigger downsides of biking in London. Bikes get stolen. I came back from a lecture to find my lock snapped off and my bike gone. At the same time a fine chap was doing a survey on stolen bikes right there. He’d been monitoring the area to see how many bikes were stolen. He’d seen my bike earlier and we talked about it and what could be done. Not much was the short answer, these bicycle thieves are very sophisticated and can unlock almost any lock in seconds. Predictably they all sell them at the same place a Sunday market in Bricklane. This weekend I hope to go up there to perhaps buy back my bike, or maybe team up with a bunch of friends who are good with baseball bats. Either way, I have a backup bike and I am back unto the streets of London tomorrow morning, come rain come shine.

Long Time Ally, Ackme, had this to say in a recent email to me. He hits the verbal nail on the head and I’d like to share it.

Ackme:

All the crap about right wing/left wing is officially declared bullshit. There’s a real “us against them” feeling going around, and “they” are mostly rich, in favor of huge corporate profits and tax cuts, which means “they” are against wages and lower taxes for wage earners. “They” lied to get the war. “They” cynically exploited 9/11. “They” are against Gay marriage, stem cell research, abortion, sex, drugs, and fun in general.
Except for themselves, of course.
“They” never work, never go hungry, never fight in wars, never have a worry in life. And all of a sudden, people are realizing that “they” don’t give a fuck about anyone but themselves and “they” constitute about 1% of the population. Oh, and “they” own the top positions in almost every company, and in both political parties. There was a movie about it! “They Live.”
